Google Signs First U.S. Deal for Carbon Capture Power to Fuel Data Centers
Google has inked a landmark agreement to purchase electricity from a carbon capture-equipped power plant in Decatur, Illinois. The 400-megawatt facility, developed by Low Carbon Infrastructure, will trap approximately 90% of emissions and represents the tech giant's first such U.S. contract. Operations are slated to begin in the early 2030s.
The deal fills a critical gap in Google's clean energy portfolio, which already includes nuclear, geothermal, and hydropower agreements. With U.S. grid capacity strained, the company is actively diversifying its energy sources through partnerships with PJM Interconnection and other providers.
Michael Terrell, Google's Advanced Energy lead, describes carbon capture technology as an essential component in the company's sustainability strategy. While financial terms remain undisclosed, final investment decisions are expected by mid-2026.
